Cantina Storica del Cardinale is a company founded in 2020 by entrepreneur partners who have a great passion for art and for the production of Primitivo wine, an excellence of the Apulian territory.
The company is based and operates in a historic cellar in Gioia del Colle founded in 1788 by the priest Vincenzo Monte who created an agricultural production center by creating spaces and buildings that are still part of the complex where the company is based.
Cantina Storica del Cardinale produces organic Primitivo wine following the best traditions and practices in all phases: starting from the cultivation of the land owned in the countryside of Gioia del Colle and Santeramo in Colle, continuing with hand-harvesting of the grapes and finally with the transformation in wine and storage in its headquarters in Gioia del Colle.
A winery in the Primitivo wine area
The headquarters of the Cantina Storica del Cardinale is located in Via Enrico De Nicola 2 in Gioia del Colle in the Province of Bari, the area where the production of Primitivo wine was born in Puglia. Crossing the entrance opens a large garden of 2,000 square meters with a pergola that can accommodate up to 100 guests for events, parties and anniversaries. From the garden you arrive in the spaces dedicated to the production of wine and the eighteenth-century room called "Cardinal’s room" with a large tuff vault where up to 20 guests are received indoors for tastings and food and wine and cultural experiences.
Vineyards and cultivation
The cultivation of the vineyards and the management of the land owned is strictly biological. The company currently produces on land covering a total area of 5 hectares of which over 3 hectares in Contrada Viglione in the countryside of Santeramo in Colle, and about 2 hectares in Contrada Marangiaro in the countryside of Gioia del Colle.
The breakdown of the qualities of organically grown grapes with reference to the land is as follows:
3.6 Ha of Primitivo
0.4 Ha of Susumaniello
0.4 Ha of Negramaro
0.2 Ha of Nero di Troia
0.2 Ha of black Malvasia
In the spaces dedicated to the winemaking of the Cellar there are the soft press for rosé and red wines, and 12 concrete tanks from the 1950s that currently allow a production cycle of over 1000 HL of wine, a capacity of about 100,000 bottles per year.
There is also a new underground space for aging in 500 L barrels and for storing bottles, with an adjoining area for the aging and hand remuage of the sparkling wine with the classic method (minimum 24 months on the lees).
In addition to the sale of bottled wine, in a special space the Cellar carries out the pouring of bulk wine in 4 different types.
The winery has the BIO certification
